Cross laminated timber (CLT) consists of layers of solid wood glued in cross direction, which create large solid panels rigid as concrete but five times lighter to be used for walls, floors and roofs on multi storey buildings.
This method has been tested on a seven floor building with actual dimensions placed on mechanical platform in Japan, which submitted by simulation the earthquake at Kobe, at 1995, with a magnitude of 7,2 R. The results were very encouraging, showing minimum deformations.
Since that time many multi storey buildings are made, especially in central and northern Europe.
In Vancouver Canada, is under construction an 18 storey building for the university of B.C.
By acknowledging the advantages of this method, it seems that buildings made of CLT, will be taller and multiply internationally.
